Gary Fisch, Owner

When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in Political Science, he didn’t yet know where life was going to take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, and decided to become an expert. He educated himself at the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World’s wine courses. The secret to his success is a passionate love and broad knowledge of his product — and the skill to communicate that delight. That enthusiasm and intelligence served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. Three moves later, Gary’s now has stores in Bernardsville, N.J., on Route 23 North in Wayne, N.J and Closter, N.J. Gary’s expertise has earned him national media attention as “The Wine Guy” on the TV Food Network show Bobby Flay Hot off the Grill. He has made guest appearances on CNN, New Jersey 12 and Bloomberg radio and television. In January 2009, he was profiled in New Jersey Monthly’s “Power Issue” as one of the 101 Most Influential People in the Garden State. Not bad for a guy who simply loves to share his enthusiasm for wine!

Adam Sami, General Manager

For the last 6+ years I have been growing my passion for the wine and spirits industry. While visiting Napa, I connected with seasoned winemaker that taught me that wine is to be enjoyed and each time you open a bottle it is a new experience. Since that day I have had the pleasure of connecting customers to the wines that create a unique journey each and every time they pop the cork. While studying to become a certified beer server I grew a strong appreciation of the local beer scene we have here in NJ. I enjoy taking my days off to visit the local breweries to see how they are pushing the styles of the classic beers.

Steve Hurst, Beer Team Leader & Spirit Sales

Originally from England, I have worked in the beverage industry for a majority of my career. For five years, I lived and worked in the stunning Central Otago (Gibbston Valley) wine region on the South Island of New Zealand. My varied experience has also led me to career stints within the music and hospitality industries. As I developed a genuine passion for wine, I was fortunate enough to land a position at a major liquor company. I brought my passion for wine, spirits and beer to the U.S. in 2013, and my knowledge of the beverage industry continues to expand. For Gary’s guests, you can expect me to bring an international perspective to wine, beer and spirits, and always go above & beyond for you at Gary’s Wine & Marketplace. My accent may confuse some of you, but my passion for this industry and providing exceptional service will always shine through!

Greg Rector, Spirits Team Lead/Manager on Duty

Before Garys, I spent 14 years in the coatings industry doing everything to help contractors and homeowners had the right product for the job. Now I am here to make sure you have all the right cocktails for every occasion. Originally when I was hired to help out the daily operation’s of the store but my love for great rums in the summer and smooth whiskey’s and bourbons in the winter lead me to the liquor section. From cocktails to Mezcal, I am here to help you explore new tastes and boundaries. If I don’t know a product, I am glad to research it and discover a new frontier with you. I hope you would all like to ride with me on this great “Spirit Quest”.

Andrew Deakin, Gourmet Team Leader

I have been a cheese enthusiast for years. Being British, I am a little biased towards English Cheddars. However, after sampling the great variety we have in our stores, I really can’t say I have a favorite cheese or even a favorite type of cheese. The thought of making a cheese platter of my four favorites keeps me up at night. Outside of work, I enjoy running, hiking, camping, watching the New York Red Bulls and generally keeping myself busy. And after all that, I enjoy nothing more than a good beer and using cheese in interesting ways – personal favorites include experimental gourmet hot-dogs. I love working at Gary’s and I look forward to meeting you and discussing all things food!

Ray Prato, Wine Team

While I was attending Teterboro School of Aeronautics, I also worked within a wine and spirits department of a major grocery store. I worked there for 13 years, and went on to work for a couple of major New Jersey wine & spirits retail stores. This experience laid down the education and skills toward a 34-year career within the wine & spirits industry. Working at Gary’s provides me with the opportunity expand my career, work within a great environment, share my knowledge and learn from my fellow co-workers, and also work within a field that I enjoy participating in tasting wine & amazing food.

FRANK MASTERS, WINE ASSOCIATE

Sunday red gravy and a sip of watered-down red wine. Maybe that’s where it started, my lifelong enthusiasm for wine, and that enthusiasm continues to grow. In 2000 my family and I moved to NJ and my office was in Parsippany. I asked a colleague for a recommendation of a good wine store and first on his list was Gary’s. I have been a customer since. After many years in the tech industry I was looking for an opportunity to explore my passion for wine. Where else would I look to work but Gary’s? I joined the company in 2020 and never looked back. Please come visit, we will treat you like a guest and help you find that perfect wine.
