This month's Gary's Direct Wine Spotlight features Fog Mountain Wines, a producer built on one simple belief: that exceptional fruit from the West Coast's most prestigious vineyards should be accessible to everyone. With deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, they source small-lot, artisanal wines from some of the most celebrated AVAs in the country — bringing craft-level quality to every bottle.

FOG MOUNTAIN PINOT NOIR 2023

The fog and the mountain are integral to the terroir that creates fine wines. As stewards of the land, we understand the essential role the fog plays in cooling the vines and preserving their flavors over a long ripening period, while the slopes of the mountain offer the unique soil and climate ideally-suited for responsible farming and fine wines. This Pinot Noir opens with wonderful aromas of Bing cherry and strawberry as well as just a touch of delicate baking spice. Bright and light flavors of strawberry pie and brown sugar create an elegant, well balanced, and medium-bodied wine with a juicy finish.

ERSTWHILE JABALI AGAVE MEZCAL

Only 75 liters made. Triple-distilled in clay pot and tube manually hollowed from agave stalk. Jabali agaves are the most difficult, temperamental agave varietal to work with due to the foam, resulting from saponins, a naturally occurring compound in jabali agaves, generated at every stage of
production from roasting to fermentation to distillation. Jabali requires much more work and yields much less mezcal, compared to other agave varietals.

ERSTWHILE TEPEZTATE ESPADIN MEZCAL

A harmonious blend of Espadín’s butterscotch and black tea richness with Tepeztate’s bold, herbaceous complexity. Notes of roasted agave, fresh green herbs, and cracked black pepper evolve into subtle hints of banana and smoked meats. The finish is long, savory, and gently smoky, with lingering minerality and spice. Ideal for sipping neat, sharing with mezcal enthusiasts, or introducing curious drinkers to a more complex expression beyond entry-level mezcal.

Humboldt Fog

This month's Cheese Spotlight is a true American original — and one of the most iconic goat milk cheeses ever made. Cypress Grove's Humboldt Fog was born in Humboldt County, California, where founder Mary Keehn set out to prove that world-class chèvre didn't have to come from France. She was right. Named for the coastal fog that rolls in off the Pacific, Humboldt Fog is instantly recognizable — a ribbon of edible vegetable ash runs through its center and dusts its bloomy rind, making it as beautiful to look at as it is to eat. Beneath that striking exterior is a cheese of real complexity: bright and lemony near the rind, giving way to a creamier, more buttery core with a clean, grassy finish that speaks directly to those Northern California pastures.
