When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in Political Science, he didn’t yet know where life was going to take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, and decided to become an expert. He educated himself at the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World’s wine courses. The secret to his success is a passionate love and broad knowledge of his product — and the skill to communicate that delight. That enthusiasm and intelligence served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. Three moves later, Gary’s now has stores in Bernardsville, N.J., on Route 23 North in Wayne, N.J and Closter, N.J. Gary’s expertise has earned him national media attention as “The Wine Guy” on the TV Food Network show Bobby Flay Hot off the Grill. He has made guest appearances on CNN, New Jersey 12 and Bloomberg radio and television. In January 2009, he was profiled in New Jersey Monthly’s “Power Issue” as one of the 101 Most Influential People in the Garden State. Not bad for a guy who simply loves to share his enthusiasm for wine!

For the last 6+ years I have been growing my passion for the wine and spirits industry. While visiting Napa, I connected with seasoned winemaker that taught me that wine is to be enjoyed and each time you open a bottle it is a new experience. Since that day I have had the pleasure of connecting customers to the wines that create a unique journey each and every time they pop the cork. While studying to become a certified beer server I grew a strong appreciation of the local beer scene we have here in NJ. I enjoy taking my days off to visit the local breweries to see how they are pushing the styles of the classic beers.
While I was attending Teterboro School of Aeronautics, I also worked within a wine and spirits department of a major grocery store. I worked there for 13 years, and went on to work for a couple of major New Jersey wine & spirits retail stores. This experience laid down the education and skills toward a 34-year career within the wine & spirits industry. Working at Gary’s provides me with the opportunity expand my career, work within a great environment, share my knowledge and learn from my fellow co-workers, and also work within a field that I enjoy participating in tasting wine & amazing food.
Sunday red gravy and a sip of watered-down red wine. Maybe that’s where it started, my lifelong enthusiasm for wine, and that enthusiasm continues to grow. In 2000 my family and I moved to NJ and my office was in Parsippany. I asked a colleague for a recommendation of a good wine store and first on his list was Gary’s. I have been a customer since. After many years in the tech industry I was looking for an opportunity to explore my passion for wine. Where else would I look to work but Gary’s? I joined the company in 2020 and never looked back.
